Understand Your Options

Knowledge can help you take the next step.

Whether you're looking for an HIV test, exploring ways to prevent HIV, need PEP after a possible exposure, or are looking for HIV treatment and care, KARE Compass can help you understand your options.

Explore the information below, then use the KARE Compass locator to connect with available services near you.

01 / HIV Testing

Know Your Status.

HIV testing is the only way to know your HIV status. Knowing your status can help you make informed decisions about your health.

HIV testing is available in many settings, including healthcare offices, community organizations, health departments, clinics, and through HIV self-testing.

Testing is a starting point.

If your result is negative, you can explore prevention options that may be right for you. If your result is positive, effective HIV treatment is available.

02 / PrEP

Prevent HIV Before Exposure.

PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. It is medicine for people without HIV that reduces the chance of getting HIV when taken as prescribed.

PrEP gives people another option for taking control of their HIV prevention. PrEP options include pills and long-acting injectable medication.

PrEP is highly effective when taken as prescribed.

A healthcare provider can help you understand your options and decide whether PrEP fits your needs.

03 / PEP

Prevention After a Possible Exposure.

PEP stands for post-exposure prophylaxis. It is medicine taken after a possible exposure to HIV to help prevent HIV.

PEP is time-sensitive.

PEP should be started as soon as possible and no later than 72 hours after a possible exposure to HIV. Every hour matters.

If you think you may need PEP, contact a healthcare provider, urgent care clinic, emergency department, or other provider offering PEP as soon as possible.

04 / HIV Treatment & Care

Live Well With HIV.

Effective HIV treatment helps people with HIV stay healthy and live long, healthy lives.

HIV treatment is called antiretroviral therapy, or ART. ART reduces the amount of HIV in the body, called the viral load.

Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U)

A person with HIV who takes HIV treatment as prescribed and gets and keeps an undetectable viral load has zero risk of transmitting HIV to their sexual partners.
